Poeta, narrador y crítico estadounidense 

Fue un autor muy fecundo, escribió alrededor de sesenta cuentos, además de una serie de poemas, aunque a este género no le dedicó el tiempo que él hubiera deseado, debido a su precaria situación económica. Para él la máxima expresión literaria era la poesía. También escribió novelas, ensayos y otros escritos. Sus ficciones abarcan diversos géneros, como el terror, la aventura, la ciencia ficción y la detectivesca, a este último se le atribuye su invención.
